Incredibly SLOW shutdown

Bill Lampman

Hi,

I've have a problem with a Win2k machine that recently has been
shutting down extremely slowly. It takes approximately 2 minutes; 1 minute
of what looks like non-activity and another of "saving settings". This used
to
take only seconds.

I have removed several spyware programs, both manually and with
SpySweeper
but it still shuts down very slowly. I am logged in as admin, the only
account on
the system. When it first boots and I shut it down before logging in, the
system
shuts down quickly. After I'm logged in the shutdown takes forever.

I have checked HKEY_CURRENT_USER and LOCAL_MACHNIE; nothing
looks funny...any ideas ?

Should I create another user to see if that user shuts down the system
more
quickly? If it DOES shut down more quickly, does that point to a problem
with the
admin account? If the problem remains even with the new user account what
are the
options besides a complete restore ?

Thanks for any advice,

Bill

I have the same symptoms; long time for "Saving your settings".
However, if I reboot a second time immediately, it reboots almost
immediately. Seems that normal operations cause this to happen. Didn't
happen before installing one of the so-called "security updates" which I
haven't identified.

It's a pain but doesn't seem to be a fatal problem since it's been about
a year since it started here.

Hope you find a cure.
Jack.

If there is malware left on the system... More checking should be
done. Alternate Anti-* apps and RootKitRevealer (Sysinternals) may
be useful. "Clean" must be as firmly established as possible.

One should have 2 administrators group accounts IMHO and for daily
Internet usage logon only with a less privileged account. It is
"best practice" to be exposed to the Internet with a logon account
that is restricted.

Once the system is "clean" or re-installed from clean media, go to
Microsoft and get/install the UPHC. "User Profile Hive Cleanup"
service tool. Recommended.

Take Mark's advice. The UPHC tool worked magic on getting my my w2k system
to shut down quickly. Installed it over a year ago. Highly recommended.
