Increase Number of Browser Windows?

B

Brent N.

Is it possible to increase the number of browser windows that can be
open simultaneously? Depending on the other applications running at the
time, the limit can be less than 30 to over 50. Every time the limit is
reached, the toolbars must be reconfigured and that last browser window
refuses to close gracefully.

TIA.

Environment is Windows XP Home SP2 with 2 GB of RAM.

Hi Brent :)

Why would you need 30 to over 50 windows open at one time? Just curious.

Maybe he is doing client load testing. However, that wouldn't make
sense on the Home Edition since the number of concurrent HTTP 1.0 and
HTTP 1.1 connections is limited (by a registry value) because, well, it
is a *workstation*, not a server!

Brent needs to divulge why he needs so many concurrent instance of
Windows and will all have concurrent connections. We don't know what he
is doing or attempting to achieve.

Hmmm...maybe.

I've just never known first hand of anyone conducting some sort of procedure
or task that would require that many windows being opened at one time. It
just raised my curious at bit as to the purpose for that many windows.

Thanks for the input. :)

Hi,
I just never know what I'll find in my Trivia folder <G>...
In this article http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=184802
In this section
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session
Manager\SubSystems\Windows
The default data for this registry value will look something like the
following (all on one line):

SystemRoot%\system32\csrss.exe ObjectDirectory=\Windows
SharedSection=1024,3072,512 Windows=On SubSystemType=Windows
ServerDll=basesrv,1 ServerDll=winsrv:UserServerDllInitialization,3
ServerDll=winsrv:ConServerDllInitialization,2 ProfileControl=Off
MaxRequestThreads=16

Changing 3072 to 4096 might allow you to open 80-90 windows. You will be
backing up (exporting) that key before you modify the value, right?

Hope this helps,
Don

You won't get much help from Microsoft on this one, but
I was able to solve a similar problem by increasing the desktop heap from
3MB to 8MB:
see my posting:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/newsgroup...3ee927-1fea-4eb6-bc80-128a5cce7028&sloc=en-us

Interesting links! Thank you for posting, James.

But damn Google Groups-Beta for breaking our old links!

Now whenever we hit an old &selm= Message-ID
it looks as if we are going to have to enter the new Advanced
search page, cut out the Message-ID from the &selm= parameter,
and do a Message-ID search for it.

Doing that with Kevin Dente's "_one_ of the responses" link
yields this new one:

http://groups-beta.google.com/group/microsoft.public.windowsxp.perform_maintain/msg/b38415e6fe7fd6ce

which is Davorin Mestric's original solution. You can see the
original thread by clicking on its (red) title:
Where/What is the "Resource Meter" in XP?
Etc.
