I posted this before, but it seems to have vanished.
Following lots of problems, one of the posts recommended
doing scf /scannow. However, when I do this, naturally
enough the PC asks me for the XP CD.

BUT when I put the CD in, it keeps telling me it's the
wrong one, and asking for the correct one. Well, it IS the
correct disk - genuine unmarked original, used once or
twice to do the original installation. So I'm stuck in a
loop and I can't progress. I've tried several times now,
but always the same...

The CD key used to install windows is not repeat IS NOT stored on the
CD in any form or fashion.
For the OP, there are several possibilities:
1) You are using an OEM CD on a RETAIL OS or vice versa - maybe
it,
2) You are using an non-SP1 CD and have installed SP1 since
installing XP - most likely - to correct instead of inserting the CD,
point the CD location to %WINDIR%\ServicePackFiles, that is unless
you've deleted it to save disk space - it is usually around 300MB.
3) There are others, but highly unlikely to mention here.

What sometimes helps with this is to put the CD in first, and exit from
its autorun; then go to Start Run for the
SFC /SCANNOW

I'm using the CD I originally used, but of course you're
right, I installed SP1 afterwards from a download.

Aha! But this error message doesn't give you the "Browse"
option to point it where you suggest, it just keeps
banging away with "Please insert the Windows XP CD"!

Nice try though, thanks for responding...
