Incorrect volume lablel

HI -

I'm trying to format my western digial usb hard drive from FAT32 to NTFS. I
followed the directions and when it asks me for volume lable I try to put in
a volume lable like I did for the other drive, and I keep getting the message
that I'm giving it an incorrect volume lable. No matter what I put in there
either I: or :wddrive. It tells me it's in correct. My other drive that I
reformatted took the buslink lable just fine.

Why is it giving me this drive labeling issue? It's a 120 gig hd. Is this a
known issue with large hard drives?

Thanks

Mel

When you view the drives in My Computer, what is the name display before
(C:)? This is the volume label and not C:.

example:
First_drive (C:)

First_drive is the "volume label"

Did you assign a label to the drive? That would show up in a DIR of the
drive. Mostly it's blank or (none).

Because you are trying to use illegal characters in the volume label.
The colon (:) is an illegal character for FAT32.

[[Limitations on volume label names
A volume label can contain as many as 32 characters for NTFS volumes and as
many as 11 characters for FAT volumes and can include spaces but no tabs.

FAT volume labels cannot contain any of the following characters:

* ? / \ | . , ; : + = [ ] < > "

This limitation does not apply to NTFS volumes.

For FAT volumes, volume labels are stored as uppercase regardless of whether
they contain lowercase letters. NTFS volume labels retain and display the
case used when the label was created.]]

I've also tried it without the colons to. No matter what I put in there it
gives me the same error message. I tried it on another computer with XP pro
sp2 and it gave me the same error.

I tried this with my other 60- gig hd and had no problems. My gut feeling
here is that it's one of two things. Either it's an incompatability with
the system and the large drive capacity. Or it has something to do with the
bios not handling the large drive. But then if that is the case why is it
seeing it.

I finally did get it to work. I had to go into windows and change the label
through there, and once I did that then it worked. Why I had to do that I'm
not sure, but at least it's working now. :)

Thanks for the help.
