Incorrect target principal name error

Florin Bota

Hy all,

I seem to have a problem: on one of the Windows 2000 servers (server A),
I get an logon error ("Incorrect target principal name") when trying to
access it from a different server (server B). Both servers are in the same
domain, both are domain controllers. On the server B when trying to explore
the server A (using \\serverA in explorer) i don't get the shares, altough
directly using the IP is corectlly showing up all shares of server A. I
tried a few times to reset the SPN of server A on server B, it works fine
for a short time afterwards, but after about 10 minutes or something alike
it returns to the same error: Incorrect target principal name. More, the two
servers don't replicate the Active Directory, giving an access erorr (I
suppose this is connected as well with SPN).

Thanks for all your help,
Florin Bota.

Are these machines both domain controllers? It sounds like the secure
channel connection between the two is not working properly. Follow the
steps in the following article to resolve them if that is the case.

Also, you need to make sure that they are configured properly for dns and
are working properly as domain controllers:
