Inconsistent excel 2007b2 time calculations that span whole days

I want to have the total number of HH:mm between two times on different days
(as part of a comparison).

I have a screenshot showing inconsistent behaviour, where diff between
29-09-06 15:01 and 30-09-06 07:25 is rendered (as expected) as 16:24, then
diff between 05-08-06 05:18 and 06-08-06 02:39 (as expected) as 21:21, but
then diff between 06-08-06 10:29 and 07-08-06 12:53 (unexpectedly) as 02:24.

Any ideas?

Your format is incorrect, so the hour display is "wrapping" every 24.

Try formatting the cell as: [h]:mm
