incomplete, partial characters

The problem that I am having occurs in the windows that
come up when you save a photo or downloading a file. The
character's lines seem to be cut off. Sometimes it is
partial characters or the letters don't fit in the little
box. When I type in a name for a photo the characters are
incomplete and scrunched together. Everything operaters
just fine but the display in the windows are not correct.
How would I correct this problem?

Long ago, early man communicated by drawing pictures.
Pictures evolved into hieroglyphics, which evolved into the
written language we know today. It seems that now we have
come full circle, and the retrogression back to
communication-by-picture is the mode of choice of humans
too stupid or too lazy to learn the language.

It use to work fine before at one point in time. I don't
think that is it.
