Incomplete boot with Xp

When I boot my computer it goes to the point of showing
the desktop except for the start button and items in lower
right corner(clock etc). I have tried cont-alt-del and
tapping F8 during start and selecting last good
configuration but to no avail. What can I do short of
reinstalling Xp?
