Incomming dial in modem connection auth failiure

I'm trying to use my PDA (ipaq 2210 WM 2K3) to remote desktop my PC (XP pro)
over a dial in modem connection.

I can get the Ipaq to dial in, and connect, but it will not log in.

I have set up the incomming connections using the modem, and set up a user
for this connection.

The PDA gets to t he password prompt, then after 3 refusals, disconnects
giving a username/password incorrect error

The PC event log shows the 3 attempted logins and a final 'disconected' event.

The attempted login events are
Type: warning
source: remote access
category none
Event ID 20187

The user mshome\erica failed an authentication attempt due to the following
reason: The current configuration of the Internet Authentication Service
(IAS) server only supports local user accounts.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

I have tried using the PC name as a domian, but this also fails.

From reading the above error it seems I have to configure the IAS to support
accounts other than local. How?

anyone know a good tutorial for setting up this type of connection? the only
ones I can find relate to the remote desktop connection - after the network
connection is established.

Thanks in advance
Martin

Al knows more about this than I do, and that KB article looks like it is
aimed at what you are trying to do, but I didn't see the detail I was
looking for in there.

The host machine is seeing the credentials as mshome\erica.

It should be seen as PCName\erica.

Try entering the username in just that form--PCName\erica and see whether
that works--I know you already tried setting the PCname as the domain, and I
agree, it seems that should have worked, but......

I'm assuming that your desktop PC is not in a domain, and that its name is
NOT MSHOME.

Thanks for the help, MSHOME was the domain I left my network with when a
friend popped around with his machine temporarily, other than that my
'network' consists of my PC, and a router/ADSL modem/firewall. unplugging
this while trying to dial in made no difference, the domain simply seemed a
logical one to try

If I don't specify a domain, the connection bangs out showing "the answering
modem has disconnected" on the PDA, and "no network protocol could be
established" in the event log. this seems strange to me.

however, trying PCname\username, (without specifying a domain) works,
insofar as now I get the error:

The user KATHRYN\erica failed an authentication attempt due to the following
reason: There was an authentication failure because of an unknown user name
or a bad password.

Despite appearances to the contrary, I'm not that dumb. going through all
these attempts I've retyped it that many times, this can't be a simple typo.

The User was created using the control panel users pane, selected in the
'incomming connections' properties.

I also tried adding the user to several groups using the 'manage' option in
my computer, including remote desktop etc (it is an admin user)

I've tried deleting and recreating the user, but still the same.

any other ideas? other than the standard 'check details and try again' MS
seems to love so much.

Thanks in advance.

This isn't the typical error one gets, but: Does this user have a password
set (at the host machine?) It must have one in order to be able to log in
via dialup or use remote desktop or do any sort of cross-network access,
under the default settings in XP.

Yep, I had tried different passwords, but to no avail. I'm guessing I've set
something up somewhere buried that I don't know about, so haven't got a clue
how to correct it. I'm going to try VPN over internet stuff with a couple of
friends soon, so I might try that route instead, see if I can get this
running from a proper XP machine rather than the palmtop, that might give me
a little more info on where I'm going wrong.

Its about due for a fresh install anyway, maybe that will help.

Thanks for your help

Have you tried creating another user and password then trying this again?
