Inbox Disaster

I am running Outlook Express 6.0 on ME. The last couple of days, it has been
flaky, sometimes refusing to display the Inbox unless I reboot and sometimes
crashing outright after retrieving an e-mail. This happened once again and
now it tells me there are no objects in the inbox whatsoever. It seems to be
working again apart from the lost inbox messages. Does anyone know what is
going on or how I can retrieve the old contents of the Inbox?
