In the UK what is the exact nature and type of the offense of using an
illegal copy of winzip or windows or downloading and using a copied version
of a song?

1. Are the offenses all the same eg. a copywrite violation or is for examlpe
downloading an illegal copy of windows more serious than a song or winzip?

2. Has anybody ever been prosecuted in the UK for illegally using a copied
version/unlicensed version of software.

I do mean "use" and not "distribute". If I wanted to distribute software,
what is the best protection against piracy in the UK?

If you want to find out, install a pirated version of AutoCad 2004 and let
the company (www.autodesk.com) know that you are using the program. They
WILL prosecute. You will find out in a brief amount of time what the exact
charges are.

Why ask for legal advice in this newgroup?

In the distant past, England would cut a pick-pockets hands
off. Today, the UK would probably just pat you on the back
and say "don't do it anymore." If you are copying for your
own use, it is probably civil law, if you are re-selling it
is commercial crime and cold involve fines and jail time.

Why ask for an explanation as to why I posted this question that is as
relevant and ontopic as other posts? |

Yes that is what I was thinking. Although in the UK we have the highest
percentage of our population locked up in jail in the entire European Union.
So I would not talk about the UK being a soft touch.

Well, it isn't truly relevant as it isn't a technical question, which is
what this newsgroup is for. If I were you I'd talk to a lawyer in the UK
about this.
