In "file as" why do parenthesis disappear?

In my Outlook 2003 contacts I presently have File-as set for Last, First
(Company). I have been successful in using VB code to change this to
Company, Last First for 3000 existing contacts. of course I did it in a
copy of the contacts folder just in case of trouble.

However in doing this I noticed that for my test folder and for the original
folder there were some contacts which had part of the "file as" within
parenthesis and other contacts with the same format which had no parenthesis
e.g.

Last, First (Company) or

Last, First, Company or

Company (Last, First) or

Company, Last, First

Obviously as it happens on both original and test folders it has nothing to
do with the VB code used to change one format to the other.

What could be causing this?

Well if I had known the answer I would have posted it.
I'm not a coder. Maybe no one else here is either. Why not try in a
programming group?

to
Russ,

The presense or absense of the parenthesis exists on the original pst and on
another computer with a different pst which has never had any "save as"
changes or code applied

Thanks for replying anyhow.
