Any good tips on improving outlook over a vpn. I already have added the
exchange server to the hosts file on the client machine but what else can I
do to speed things up? Does syncing help that much? We are talking about
Outlook 2000 on a Windows XP Pro client machine connecting to an Exchange
5.5 server on a Windows 2000 Server. Performance lags when users open excel
spreadsheets and other attachments. The attachments aren't that large so
performance shouldn't be suffering too much.

Tell Outlook to prompt for "connect" or "work offline" and work offline by
default. Set up regular automatic syncs to an OST file on the local
computer, in the background. This will help performance and also, if the
VPN/Internet connection goes down, Outlook won't crash because of it.

If you configure Off Line folders then the whole mailbox would be available
off-line. This allows access to the mailbox even when the VPN link is down.
Also rereading messages and attachments goes a lot faster.
