importing word files from a mac displays as barcodes why is this?

When I receive an email with an attachment created in Word on a mac, I have
problems in opening it on any PC running Word 2003 with a operating system of
XP2. The files display as barcodes with the wording underneath. I am however
able to import the word doc direct into a quark doc using get text command.
An older PC running word 2001 with aoperating system of windows 2000 will
open the file but in courier even though it tells you the font is gill and
this font is loaded.

A Word document created on a Mac will often not have the ".doc" extension at
the end of the file name. Try adding the extension and then opening it with
Word. That has often worked for me.

I hope this helps.

.... In fact, the .doc extension really shouldn't be necessary. Save the
attachment to your hard drive, then open that copy using Word's File>Open
command. You'll probably find that the doc opens correctly if you're not
trying to open it from your mail server.
