importing problem/windows movie maker

i have v.5 of wmm and just got a new sony dig camcorder..can download fine to
the
software provided and view..but it is limited..i want to be able to resize
and email videos to others..however windows movie maker absolutely will
not..import my videos. my son sent me one he made and it imported just
fine..why not mine?
have tried several tricks to no avail..need help

Connect the camcorder with firewire and not with USB. Then capture the
videos from the camcorder direct into WMM.
