IMPORTING MESSAGES FROM OUTLOOK EXPRESS

L

Lindsay Graham

When importing from OE6, WMail puts all the imported folders into a new
folder called 'Imported Folder'. This means that one has to drag and drop
all the imported folders to their desired locations -- DEFINITELY a
non-trivial task in my case, as I have MANY folders and sub-folders.

Is there any way of getting WMail to import direct to Local Folders as was
the case with Outlook Express?

I seem to be finding more and more things about WMail that make it more
difficult to use than OE6 -- and I have not yet found any real improvements.
Sure hope I find some of the latter soon!

I'm still trying to resolve the import mentioned below, but so far without
success. Does anyone know whether Windows Live Mail can import from OE6
direct to Local Folders or does it also import to a new folder called
'Imported Folder'?

I've just returned to this issue, and my renewed attempts to transfer
messages from OE6 to WMail have still not been successful.

I've followed the methods described in
www.vista4beginners.com/Migrate-from-Outlook-Express-to-Windows-Mail and
www.oehelp.com/backup.aspx, I'm running WMail as Administrator and there are
no read-only files in the OE6 temporary store. But there are still 2
problems:

1. WMail still puts everything into 'Imported Folders', which will be a big
hassle for me -- I can't be the only person with a large number of folders
and sub-folders, so does anyone have a workaround?

2. The import into WMail always ceases after a few hundred messages (it
always starts on the 'Deleted Messages' folder) and WMail restarts itself --
why does this happen and, more importantly, how do I prevent it?

The only non-standard aspect that I can think of is that the WMail store
folder and the OE6 temporary store are both in sub-folders of C:\Documents,
ie, not in the Vista user folder called Documents. I can't see how this
would affect the import.

Grateful for any help.

Thanks, Robert, but the help file you cited is actually copied from
www.oehelp.com/backup.aspx, so it does not add anything to what I already
know.

Why on earth would Microsoft introduce a new email client, force us to use
it instead of Outlook Express, but not provide a seamless method of
transferring all data from Outlook Express? I find this beyond belief.

Any other thoughts on my 2 problems below?

I suspect that they were planning to have us switch to Windows Live
Mail, but didn't have it ready in time, so they sent us Windows Mail
instead.

I'm not familiar with your other two problems.

Microsoft did offer a seamless method, and I used it successfully when I
transitioned from OE to WM some 10 months ago. When you start Vista
the first few times, a Welcome Center screen comes up, which (among
other things) offers to "Transfer Files and Settings." If you click on that,
it launches the Windows Easy Transfer program. You can also find that
program under All Programs, Accessories, System Tools. It transferred
my OE accounts, settings, folders, emails, contacts, and message rules.

The thing people seem to miss most often on Steve Cochran's oehelp site is
the caution about the path, even though it's in red and in a box.

Thank you for the reply, Frank, but I'm not clear on the relevance of your
comment. I was certainly aware of Steve Cochran's caution in red, and I
have never had any problem with the path.

Thanks for reminding me, Gary, about Windows Easy Transfer. I did use that
earlier to transfer some files (not OE), but found it easier to do it
manually so that they ended up where I wanted them, rather than where
Microsoft thinks I should have them.

I've gone back and looked at WET again and, while it says that OE messages
etc can be transferred, the Advanced option does not indicate how this can
be done. Also, none of the Microsoft blurbs that I've seen about WET
mention that Message Rules can be transferred.

Can you help me work out how to transfer OE only, including messages,
address book, accounts and message rules? Thanks in advance.

It's been a while since I used WET, but there is a custom option
where you can select (or deselect) what you want. The OE stuff
is hidden under a non-intuitive category called something like
"Communications." So, deselect everything but that.
