i am trying to open a document in wordperfect in word but i am losing all of
my formatting, although all of he fonts i have used are now in word. i have
written two books totalling more than 1,000 pages of tedious time-consuming
formatting which i cannot afford to lose.
is this possible or has microsoft chosen this as their vehicle to fight
corel? (i must be a conspiracy theorist...)

try an export/save as from WordPerfect (as DOC, RTF, etc.) -- that's
probably the best you'll get when opening in Word.

As a side note: I don't know WP at all, but there are so many articles
up on the Word-MVP site (http://word.mvps.org/) about it that suggest WP
works very differently than Word. I suggest taking some time to
familiarize with how Word works (namely, but not only) in contrast to
WP. ["Tedious time-consuming formatting" is not something you should
have to endure in any modern word processor, for instance.]
