importing excel file

I have files that I have exported from an oracle based program into excel
format. I am trying to skip a step in a process of importing the excel files
into an Access DB. when I do this, I get an error such as file contains no
data. However, when I open in excel first, then import into Access, it
works.

Is this a quirk of Excel? Is there something I can do in Access to
circumvent this process?

Thanks,

Linda

I not sure what specifically is going on here. I have come across some odd
circumstances like this when files are exported from non MS apps (Oracle) to
a MS app (Excel). I have encountered a number of headaches dealing with
Excel data. Sometimes it likes to reformat data, text into numbers, drop
leading zeros. Can you request that this file be exported as a text file?
I've come across far fewer issues this way.

Thanks for the response, Paul. I am grateful that the owners of the database
will even let us export into an excel file. I've been told that they have
been given orders to not fix their database (it has several bugs), because we
will going to a new system - in 2012!!!!

I would at least make the request. This would be a very small matter for a
dba or a subordinate to make, a matter of minutes. 2012 is a very long
ways off.
