Importing Address Book Issue

B

BP

When I import my address book from Win98SE it loads all the addresses into
"Main Identities Contacts" rather than "Shared Contacts" where the big list
is stored in 98. This makes them unavailable to add to the other identities
folders when I am in that identity. I am importing the .wab I exported in
the address book window from the start menu, not in OE. Do I need to copy
and paste everything to "Shared Files", or is there a way to force the
addresses into there?

Also, "Main Identity" can't be renamed. Is that my name from now on or am I
supposed to create a sub-identity for my self?

Contacts import to "Main Identity's Contacts" by default, BP. Groups and
Folders will neither import nor export. You will have to drag or copy Main
Identity's contacts to Shared Contacts. More in Address Book Help>Share
contacts.

The default "Main Identity" is notoriously unstable. I suggest you create a
new Named Identity (File>Identities>Add new identity). Assuming all is
well, import messages from Main Identity before deleting it
(File>Identities>Manage Identities).

General OE caveats:

Don't use Inbox or Sent Items to archive messages. Move them to local
folders created for this purpose.

Disable Background Compacting and frequently perform a manual compact of all
OE folders while "working offline". More at
http://insideoe.tomsterdam.com/files/maintain.htm.

Your anti-virus application's email scanning feature can also cause such
corruption. Disable it. It provides no additional protection.

Thanks, PA. I had a notion that was how it was, but wanted to check to see
if there was a shortcut first. Your info is appreciated. Thanks for the
heads up on "Main Identity" folder - good to know. The latter points I've
been doing for a while in W98, so it will be no change when using XP. Thanks
again.
