import xls or csv into new Dist List

I need to import a 500 item list which I have as a xls and csv file
into a Distribution List and not the general Contacts address book.

If I try as a xls file, it asks for a range. I read the help file but
it makes no sense.

If I try with a csv file, I have to Map before the import will happen
but nothing coincides.

My excel file has 4 columns, first name, middle initial, last name,
email address.

How do I do the above?

You can't, and I don't see why you would want to. The chances of being able
to maintain and use a DL of 500 members are next to 0. Import the entries
into your Contacts Folder and then use a reliable way to group those
Contacts, such as categories or a separate Contacts subfolders.

No need to ask more than once.

Ok, but how do you make a separate contacts sub folder?
Is that something you can do with the Outlook Address book or in the
Folders view where you see Contacts, you click on the Contacts folder
and make a new folder underneath it?

Never do anything in the Address Book view. Always use Contacts Folder view.
File > New > Folder....
