import outlook express address book with all group separate

Art Nittskoff

I have used outlook express for years and have thousands of contacts in my
address book.

I have decided I want to start using Outlook 2007. I am having lots of
problems getting my contacts from outlook express in a usable format in
outlook.

In outlook express, I kept my contacts in many folders, but all under the
MAIN CONTACTS LIST. It looks like the folders I used would be like the
categories list in outlook.

I also have lots of groups...which would be like distribution lists in
outlook.

In outlook express, I would have a separate entry for each person on my
list, and then I would place them in a folder (their main entry on my list)
and drag them to each of the groups I have them in.

To use an example, let’s say I have John Doe as a contact. So I have one
entry that is just John Doe and his email address. Now, I do the emails for a
couple of different clubs and for my business. I also send out a lot of
jokes. So I might drag John Doe to 1 or 2 email groups (or distribution
lists) and put him in my joke group.

If I do a search in outlook express for John Doe, it will show me his main
contact info.

I imported all my address to Outlook 2007 and for many of my contacts, it
did not import all the information, it just put them in a distribution list.
If I search for John Doe, Outlook tells me I don't have him. If I pull up my
JOKE distribution list, I can see him in there, but when I try to get detail
on him it puts up a little box showing E-Mail Properties with just his name
and email address...no phone number or other information.

I am sorry this question is so long. I just wanted to give as much detail as
possible.
What can I do to get all my contacts to transfer properly?
Many thanks!

Unless your contacts are all under "Main Identity", I don't think Outlook's
import will be able to see them. ALso, if your groups imported
successfully, you were lucky.
