Outlook 2003

I have asked several times over the years about restoring an Outook 2003
data file and have never gotten it to work right but I'll try again anyway.
I have just installed a new hard drive and reinstalled Office 2003. Upon
opening Outlook I chose: File/Open/Outlook Data File and pointed to my
previous file. The data imported as a second set of Personal Folders with
none of my subfolders or rules intact. I have to manually copy what I have
to the "main" Personal Folders section. How do I get my subfolders and
rules back, and back where they belong? ne day I'll find the correct
answer.

Thanks in advance... Bob

Correct answer is posted here on a daily basis. Take a look at these pages
for info on Outlook data backup or transfer:
http://www.slipstick.com/config/backup.htm
http://www.howto-outlook.com/Howto/backupandrestore.htm
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/assistance/HA010771141033.aspx

What you claim is simply not possible had you actually done what you said.
Had you opened your previous PST file or a valid copy thereof, all the data
would be intact, including subfolders. There is more to your story that you
have left out.

Since rules have been stored differently with each version of Outlook, it is
always better to transfer them using an RWZ file and the Outlook Rules
Wizard just to be sure they make it.

Your subfolders should certainly appear when you copy your data from the old
file to the new. I don't see why they are not.
The rules, AFAIK in 2003 are held in the registry and not in the pst file.
AFAIK the only way of restoring them is by using the "Save My Settings
Wizard" which can be found in Start-All Programs-Microsoft Office-Microsoft
Office Tools. Of course you need to do this before removing either software
or hardware.....

I am not sure what I could have left out. This is what has happened every
time I have tried it.

MAYBE THIS WOULD HELP. What would happed if instead of opening Outlook and
opening the file, what if I started with Outlook closed and just double
clicked the correct pst file?

Thanks... Bob

No that won't work. What you can do is to do Control Panel-Mail-Data
Files-Add. Navigate to where you put the old file. Set it as default
Delivery location.

Nothing would happen, other than a win msg asking you to select an app to
open the pst, and selecting outlook wont do it.
If you opened the origonal pst file within outlook, as you state, the entire
folder structure would be there.

Everyone says it would be there. It isn't. What may be wrong? I may not
be a geek but I am far from an inexperienced user. I go back to DOS for
what that is worth.

Answer was already posted. Repeating:
If the file you opened does not contain all your data, then you either
did not open the correct file or you created/copied said file incorrectly.
Those are the details you left out.

If it isn't then it's highly probable you either have the wrong pst file or
it is corrupt. What size is this file and how did you save it originally?

How to backup/ restore links were posted in the response from Russ
If you opened a pst within outlook and the folder structure was 'missing'
then so would be the mails stored in those folders.
The general procedures for backing up the pst is to simply make a copy of
it, with outlook closed, do not use the Import/Export options, locate that
pst in a suitable location on the new PC/HD, eg Documents Folder, do not
overwrite any existing pst, then within outlook open that pst.
