import of mp2 format

I am having a problem importing a movie that is in mp2
format that I created with my ATI software. I can play
the movie back fine in the ATI player, but if I try and
play it in Windows Media Player or import into Movei
Maker it says File is empty. If I try and play it in WMP
then I get a error and asks me if I want to send a report
to Microsoft. I am thinking that possibly I need a
codec, but am not sure. I have checked to see that my
system is updated using the Windows Updates, but I have
everything. I also made sure the media player is up to
date as well.

Can anyone give me a answer why this isn't working? I
can import if the format is mpg, but I need the better
compression rate.

Thanks!

Yes, it's a codec issue, so if MM2 doesn't accept it, then you'll need to
convert it to another format first. MP2 files are MPEG. Use something like
TMPGEnc to convert it to a different format like AVI. See the Setup >
Software page of www.papapjohn.org for a link to download it.

Is there a codec plugin that can make it work with
Windows Media Player? If I use that program you are
specifying will I lose my quality in the video my
converting it?

I searched my laptop for MP2 files and found a batch of them that were made
by MyDVD in preparation for making a DVD. They open in the Windows Media
Player, using the InterVideo Video Decoder (for MPEG2 files).

I don't have any personal recommendations for MPEG2 codecs... see the
Importing Source Files > Video > MPEG2 page of my site for some comments.

Yes, file conversion usually means some loss of quality.... so keep your
originals

Hey John looks like the MyDVD gave me the right codec to
do what I want to do now. The only problem now is when
it imported it into MM2 it did not split the movie into
small segments. It is just one segement. Is there a way
around this?

Thanks again!

Once it's in the collection as a single clip, you can try a right mouse
click and try created clips there. But if it doesn't do it, you're into
manually splitting it.

Another thing you might try is importing it into MM1, which might do the
scene splitting.... have it create a collection database for it and then
import the collection into MM2. It would depend on if the extra steps would
help you save enough.
