Import iCalendar sent from other Outlook users

I use Outlook 2000. How do I get it to correctly import an iCalendar file
(.ics) sent from another Outlook user?

Currently when I double-click on the attached .ics file, Outlook treats it
as a .vcs file, and complains that it is the wrong format.

Save the file and open it in Notepad. If it contains a VALARM line, delete
it. Save and try doubleclicking again.
