Implementing a Side Bar

Hi - I would like to create a navigation bar to the left of the screen
(top/down)
that appears most of the time. This is very similar to when you see
Microsoft
help appear on the right and pushes other access windows across to the left.
So my application would have a form to the left that takes up say 100px wide
and the rest of the screen width is used by my data entry forms.

I have never done anything like this previously so wondering if anyone has
any
tips or if there is any code on the MVPs site etc that I missed.
