IMAP -Lost email files

I was switching ISP's for email. My current IPS only offers web mail. So
before I switched The ISP had me setup IMAP to download my emails. After I
downloaded all the emails I switched to the new ISP. I then deleted the IMAP
settings and in doing so it deleted my downloaded email file. How was this
possible?

Because IMAP accounts use a local cache of the online mailbox. Deleting the
account will delete the cache.
