on most websites I cannot see any images or pictures
only the placecards..I have checked the Internet options
under multimedia and all are ticked to show pictures

Most likely an overstuffed Temporary Internet Files folder. Empty via
Tools>Internet Options...>General tab<Delete Files button in IE. If no
luck, see Ramesh' suggested link.
