images in the preview pane

I can't figure out how to see images (jpg, gif) in the
preview pane. The only option I seem to have is to open
them in another program.
 
That is correct. Only in-line pictures (inserted in the body) are displayed
in the message. Attached pictures are simply displayed as attachments.
