I want to write a letter with a "jpg" image or similar heading it,

Is their a freeware application that would enable me to accomplish this so
that I can then print the letter ?

I have tried using Wordpad (XP) but the images only appear as links
whichever option I choose within the program.

Thanks.

Any word processor. Try openoffice.org.

To insert a picture in wordpad do the following:
Open the picture up in your favorite graphics viewer. Hit Ctrl + C (or
right click-->copy)
Go to wordpad and put the cursor where you want the photo's upper left
corner. Hit Ctrl + V (or right click-->paste)

Dud,
Thanks for this info.
I realized their must have been a way to get images to appear in Wordpad as
I managed it on my first computer but forgot how.

Brian.

To Brian,

Try PC Suite 602 Pro Free office suite, - www.software602.com

The one that I have allows you to drop a picture onto the sheet that you are typing a letter on!
John.
