Image stays "stuck" on screen

Sometimes I'll get small image from a web page which stays on my screen, even
if I close the browser.

I've had the same thing happen with applications where a dialog box won't
close, and it just sits there, even if I close all windows. If I try to make
it go away by refreshing the screen, then I get the word "refresh" stuck on
the screen.

What could be going on here? Better yet, is there anything I can do other
than simply rebooting the computer? That's the only thing I've found that
works.

Thank you!!

You could try logging of, then logging back on.

Maybe running a program that runs full screen, such as a 3D game if you have
any, then closing it.

Where is the word "refresh" coming from? Not sure if this is a driver issue
or something else.

dobey, thanks.

I don't run any games or full screen programs. The only things I would have
open would be stuff like Word, Excel, Photoshop, Outlook, and other garden
variety stuff.

The word "refresh" comes up when I try to solve this program by closing all
windows and right-clicking on the blank screen and selecting refresh. This
will make the "stuck" image go away, but it will replace it with the word
refresh.

I'll try the logging off and logging back on idea. It's still kind of
disruptive to have to stop what you're doing and close everything and log off
and log back on, or to just try to keep working with this image showing
through.

Thanks again for your suggestions!

The reason I suggest a 3d game is because these programs take control of the
hardware and, I assume flush the video memory for the game program, (though
I could be wrong about that), meaning the desktop will redraw itself when
you close the 3D program.

Maybe even a 3d screensaver might work if you ran a preview from the screen
saver properties dialogue.

OK, so the word "refresh" comes from the context menu when you use the right
mouse button. I though it might have been an OSD display element from your
monitor or something.

F5 on the keyboard will do the same thing, (refreshes all windows), so maybe
that is an option.

You could probably just minimise the windows instead of closing, but if that
doesn't work, maybe one of the programs is causing the problem.

Do you know what version of DirectX you are running? Maybe updating that and
your video drivers could help solve the problem.

dobey, thanks again.

Yes, the word "refresh" is from when I use the context menu to try to
refresh the screen. When I try to do it using F5, nothing happens (i.e., the
orginal image just stays there).

I don't use any 3D programs and I simply have a blank screen as my
screensaver. (I'm no tun at all, ha-ha).

Also, it doesn't matter whether I simply minimize the windows or close the
programs. The image still stays stuck on the scrreen. I've often tried
doing a CRTL-ALT-DEL to see if I can find any tell-tale programs lingering or
any unusual processes running but there's nothing out of line.

So I geuss I'm just stumped.
