I'm willing to pay for AntiVirus but.....

Hi,

I am willing to pay for Antivirus software. Until now I have been using
Norton but I have 4 machines within my home and I don't want to pay $40-
50 to protect each PC per year. What is the best solution for me? It
does not have to be free but I don't think I should need to pay more
then about $20 a year to protect my 4 PCs. These companies need to make
their money on volume. Anyways any suggestions. I do experiment with
lots of software which I am constantly downloading so it needs to be
software that is up to date etc. I recently was playing with F-Secure
which seems very good but I can't pay that money to protect all these
PCs. Yes I know how to grab all these from the warez scene but I want to
pay for something I use and need.

Set one PC up as a file/mailserver and stick a single copy of AV
software on that PR:

Migrate to Linux...

Initially, their AV was free (and light on resources!) but they
started charging for it a couple of years ago.

Read the site carefully. The first year is free, then their normal charges
apply.

Duh...It plainly states that when you register. It requires no credit
card information and whether you choose to continue using it is up to
you. here's a clue, Einstein. It's a product promotion.

Who else gives you a year free trial? Not many companies do it...

If you like it, pay for. If not you have the choice to go back to your
previous AV-version and you saved a year's payment.

McAfee does it with their Firewall (through certain ISP's). There are likely
others.

Because the market is so saturated right now with competitive products, the
only viable promotion option would be to offer competitive rebates.
Those are much more expensive to administer and put the onus on the consumer
to carry the burden for follow up.

If CA gets even a 5% return on next year's subscription, that's business
they probably wouldn't have otherwise.
