i'm receiving a bunch of emails that delivery status notification

i'm receiving a bunch of emails that delivery status notification failed but
it's emails that i never sent to people i have never heard of! it's happening
a lot and it's been happening for the last few weeks. is someone hacked into
my account and using my email? what should i do?

Most likely some spammer is just spoofing your address and sending mail
pretending it came from you. When that mail hits a server that refuses
it for whatever reason, the delivery failed message is going to you
instead of to the jerk spammer.

However...I would make sure you have a current, updated, and working
anti-virus/anti-spyware product on your computer and I would give your
machine a thoughtful scan with it.

i have a really good virus program and it updates and scans daily. it's avg.
i understand that some spammer is sending mail as if it came from me but how
do i stop it? i don't want to keep getting these emails.

You can't stop spammers from spoofing your address. You can, though,
attempt to create a rule that discards the messages.
