My problem history:

I have an older Dell laptop that came loaded with Win'98SE, I upgraded it to
WinMe and recently, I've been trying to install a wireless adapter, with
absolutely no luck! After talking to Linksys and bouncing several posts
around Newsgroups, I felt that the Linksys adapter was probably defective,
so today I purchased a different brand (Motorola) and I ran into problems
with it too (Missing .dll files, mostly)! So I figured that there must be
something wrong with my OS, so I bought a WinXP upgrade and tried to upgrade
my OS, but ran into another missing file! Being very frustrated, I decided
hell with it, I'm going to choose "New Install" and start fresh, NOT!! The
installation got as far as copying new files & folders, but when it rebooted
itself, I got the following error:

"Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
<Windows root>\System32\hal.dll. Please re-install a copy of the above
file."

What do I do now? I can't even boot into a Command Prompt and copy the
file, 'course I don't know how to do that anyway!!

Can someone help?

Thank you,
Ray

I just posted my own wee little problem, but you might want to do a quick
google check on hal.dll. Checked a couple places really quick and the file
is different for each machine, so just copy/paste wouldnt work anyway.
Sounds like the original install disks are the best choice. Or... check out
Dell as well using the same search parameter. The archives there helped me
out on a few things.

Multiposting is really irritating, learn how to cross post!!!!!!!!!!

But others complain about cross-posting.

I have been using newsgroups for 10+ years and quite frankly of all the
annoying habits multiposting and/or cross-posting are way down the list of
*my* complaints.

Oh well. To each his/her own I suppose.

Peace.

To retrieve HAL.DLL from the Windows CD-ROM
-----------------------------------------------------

Start > Run. then type
MSCONFIG
Click Expand File (button)

OR

Extract a new copy of the hal.dll file from the Windows XP CD to the
Windows\System32 folder on your hard disk. To do so, type the following
lines at a command prompt, pressing ENTER after each line, where CDROMDrive
is the drive letter of the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive that contains the Windows
XP CD-ROM, and Drive is the drive on which Windows is installed:

extract D:\i386\hal.dl_ Drive:\windows\system32\hal.dll

For example, if your CD-ROM is drive D and Windows is installed on drive C,
type extract D:\i386\hal.dl_ c:\windows\system32\hal.dll, and then press
ENTER.

But others complain about cross-posting.

Cross-posting to less than 5 groups is the proper method as it means if
I click on your article that my news reader will mark it read across all
the groups you posted too without me having to read it again in each
group.

Posting a message to more than 5 groups has always been considered
improper/bad, and multi-posting has/will always be considered bad.

I think that top posting is actually the most annoying thing done on
usenet now that people have found it (thanks to MS Outlook and web
interfaces).

I'm OK with this.
...and multi-posting has/will always be considered bad.

Let's say you have a question about a cancer treatment (a bit over dramatic
huh?) and you want to reach the widest possible audience. You typically have
two options.

1) Type your message and cut & paste up to five newsgroups (in the message
header) that you found via Google - that deal with your medical issue before
clicking send.
OR
2) Before you send your post to the first newsgroup, copy the text body to
the clipboard. Then go to each of the other newsgroups and repost. Certainly
less convenient than #1.

Obviously #1 is cross-posting and #2 is multiposting.

As I stated, cross-posting is more convenient - and would be my choice. But
to assuage those who are offended I will sometimes multipost instead.

It seems to me that the objections are primarily made in Microsoft
newsgroups by those who monitor several newsgroups to offer help. I seldom
see complaints in other forums. I am not sure why this is such a 'big deal'
except for multiposting where the reader of the post cannot tell if the
issue was resolved in another Microsoft newsgroup. OK, I can understand
that.

No argument here. Now that's truly annoying!!!

Having been on Usenet since 84, I can assure you that it's an age-old
problem and that the MS groups contain the most ignorant and worst
offenders of normal Usenet practices. MS really ruined Usenet when they
gave OE the ability to access Usenet - the crappy web interfaces that
don't mimic Usenet clients are also to blame, but it's also the fault of
users that don't care to learn anything about Usenet and think it's just
like email.

Multiposting has and always will be bad.

FYI, there is an interesting discussion thread about cross-posting at
http://tinyurl.com/aa4dt

Sure gets people worked up.

I bet it does :) It's always been a hot topic between those that follow
the standards and those that are self-centered, I do what I want, damn
everyone else, types.

It's also amazing to see top posters don't know to snip the part below
their posts that isn't relative to their reply, but that's fodder for
another discussion :)
