I'm not getting a POST with my new A7N8X Deluxe.

Greetings,

I'm not getting a POST with my new A7N8X Deluxe.

On initial power up I am not getting any audio beeps nor any video output.
All fans and LEDs are running.

I have tried several power cycles each waiting 30 seconds for activity
before shutting down.

At this time the only connections on the board are; The ATX power supply,
the Power SW connector, and the Reset SW connector

The only item on the board is an AMD Athlon XP 2800+ CPU 333FSB Barton

During my troubleshooting I have removed these items; Ultra 512MB PC3200 DDR
400Mhz module, XFX GeForce FX 5200 256Mb DDR 8X AGP Card and WD Raptor 36GB
Serial ATA HD

All jumpers are in their default positions (never moved).

All components have been assembled using a anti-static wrist strap.

Any input is GREATLY appreciated!

Thanks for your time!

Hi Tony-
During my troubleshooting I have removed these items; Ultra 512MB PC3200 DDR
400Mhz module, ...<

How much memory is installed? My A7N8X will not POST with more than one stick
of memory, and that memory must be in slot 3 (furthest from the cpu). Runs
fine with 1 stick of 512 MB, but more than one and any slot but 3 -- all I get
is continual long beeps.

So I had a choice -- spend $250 for "certified" memory which might or might not
solve the issue, or spend $75 for an ABIT board without an Nvidia chipset.
Easy decision -- and I spent the difference on a new ATI video card.

Try your heatsink/fan unit on the processor. It may not be seated properly.
The computer will run longer the first time you try to post. Then for a
shorter time the second right after the first when the heat sink is not on
properly. The overheat protection comes in to play here.

Also, I am under the impression that the board will not post *at all* if
there is no fan detected on the CPU header. Although I'm sure you HAVE
attached the hsf to this header...perhaps there is a loose connection(?)

Also, as Larry mentioned; since you stated that you'd removed a 512 stick of
RAM...are you therefore using a different stick? Or do you mean that you
did a re & re without success?

Reset the BIOS. Unplug the PC, remove the battery on the mobo, move
the jumper next to the battery over to the next two pins for 10
seconds. Put the jumper back, battery back, plug in and reboot. Plug
in a speaker to hear the verbal trouble codes. Put another fan on the
CPU header. Use a 12v adapter for your HSF. If the BIOS or Probe sense
RPM's that are too low the PC might not start.

The board is up and running though I'm not sure what the issue was. I did
however follow your advice about "Plug in a speaker to hear the verbal
trouble codes". I didn't realize an external speaker was needed for the
voice. I 'assumed' the pizo on the board was going to be used or the PC
speaker. When I had the board stripped down and out of the case I started
power up tests component by component listening to the voice output.
Everything went fine. I figured it was a short between the case and mobo.
I check all my contact points before returning the board... all looked good.
Tried the mobo in the case again and up she went. I'm guessing I missed
SOMETHING along the way but I'm not sure what. Wish I had something useful
to offer as a resolution but a working mobo isn't something I want to
complain too much about :)

Thanks for all the input. I appreciate your time! It's all downhill from
here... <GRIN>

You're lucky. My first A7N8X-d arrived DOA. I did all of the above and a
bunch more, and all I could get was the Asus splash screen, with no keyboard
input (thus could not get into BIOS). Spent 2-3 days wracking my brain over
the thing, finally RMA'd it, got the new A7N8X in and it worked perfectly.
Sometimes the new ones ARE bad.
