Im in excel and it will not let me type what i need?

I'm in excel and i need to put 1-30 and it automatically puts 30Jan when i go
to the next cell and can i change that?
 
Janet, format the cell as text first or put a ' in front of it, it want show

Using Excel 2003
 
Preformat the cell as text, then type the entry
or
start your entry with an apostrophe: '1-30
 
Change the format of the cell to Text.

Format -> Number - > Text (From category)

Hope this will clear your doubt.
