I cannot open any of my files in Word 2003. When the program first opens the
message I get is: "word cannot open this document template C:\program
files\...\A20MSWOO.Dot". Then I click O.K. and the program opens, but I
can't open any files.
When I close the program i get this message: "The file Normal. Dot already
exists. Do you want to replace it?"
When I clidk on a file the message I get is: This file is unavaliable.

Thank you.

Disable the Office Plugin that comes with Symantec/Norton AntiVirus. See

the Norton AntiVirus Office plug-in" for more information.

Garfield...thanks for your reply.
I already ad removed Norton Anti-virus....and I think that's the problem.
It seems there is still some parts of Norton sitll in my computer. So going
to the website you suggested above won't work. Any other suggestions?
Thanks.

Search for an OFFICEAV.DLL file on the hard drive (be sure to include system
and hidden files/folders in the search options). This is the Office Plugin
file from Norton, and it sometimes remains installed when you uninstall
Norton. If you find it, note the folder where it is located, and use the
"regsvr32 /u" method described in KB329820 to unregister the DLL.

This totally worked for me as well, after several hours of searching for and
trying various fixes! Help is much appreciated.

To aid those who may be searching in the future, this fix solved two
problems with files not opening in Office 2000 programs. In Word, the error
message said "The file [name] is not available." In PowerPoint, it said,
"path or filename is invalid."

OfficeAV.dll was still on the computer, even though Norton Antivirus had
been taken off long ago. I have no idea why these problems suddenly started
happening, but glad I've been able to eliminate them!

Probably unrelated, but it may be worth mentioning, I also ran Detect and
Repair and deleted Normal.dot (which also may have been corruputed) in the
course of trying other fixes.
