I'm confused. I have 2 computers and a router.

Both XP computers connect through the router to my DSL provider.
How do I now network the two computers together.
None of the networking wizards mention a router.

M$ uses the phrase "Residential Gateway" to mean a normal sort of
SOHO router.

Wizards suck. Just do this:

put comp A and comp B in the same workgroup (Control Panel -> System ->
Computer Name -> Change)

Enable file and printer sharing on each machine (Control Panel -> Network
Connections -> [network connection properties] -> make sure file and
printer sharing is included and ticked in the connection's items)

Create a folder on each machine and share it (to share a folder,
right-click the folder -> Sharing and security -> share this folder)

On either machine, go through My Network Places -> Entire Network -> MS
Windows network -> [workgroup] ->

There's your network.

I am really struggling with this one - I have 2 XP Pro laptops and cannot
get them to see each others shared files or use the shared printers.

I have tried all the wizards multiple times with no luck. Followed your
instructions down to the last pointWindows network -> [workgroup] ->

When I open up My Network Places I don't see>Entire Network as an option??

and cannot

Run the Network Setup Wizard and tell it that the computers connect to
the Internet through a residential gateway (router). Other options
disable file and printer sharing.

The network's shared disks and folders should automatically appear in
My Network Places, but it might take some time. To access the other
computer directly, type its name in the Start | Run box in this
format:

\\computer

If you run Windows Explorer, you can click My Network Places | Entire
Network | Microsoft Windows Network | [workgroup].
