illegal operation

When I start Xcel this error pops up:
"this program has performed an illegal operation and will
be shut down."
Please help!

That is a vague error message that could be either date or
program related. Are you double clicking a datafile open
or simply Excel. Start first by attempting to open up
Excel by itself in its safe mode. Click Start, then Run,
and type in excel /s (e-x-c-e-l-(space)-/-s). If it opens
ok, your troubleshoot is now about things between it's
safe and normal modes. If not, your looking lower at OS
related stuff.

Depending on the version of Excel you have, you could try
a repair using the original disc(s). Failing that, it may
be a reinstall.

Sometimes the file that contains the customized toolbar gets corrupted.

Can you try this:

close excel
windows start button|run
excel /safe
(starts excel in safe mode--avoids code and toolbars)

try out right clicking.

If that worked, close excel and search for *.xlb.
Search through hidden folders and hidden files, too.

Rename any you find to *.xlbOLD.

Then restart excel. If that worked, then dump those *.xlbOLD and recreate your
customized toolbars when you have time.
