Hi,

I have "Win XP Home Edition" on my home desktop and
recently I found that it does not have IIS installed. I
tried the following two things to add IIS on the machine
but both failed:

1. I went to "Control Panel" and clicked on "Add/Remove
Programs" to add IIS but saw that IIS is not even listed.

2. I ran a "Win Professional" CD and chose "Add Windows
Component" option but did not see IIS listed either. Then
I ran the CD on another machine which is also on XP
platform and chose the same option and I saw IIS in the
list.

Any idea about what is wrong on my home desktop and how to
add IIS on it based on my current situation?

Thanks a lot!!
Jenny

Windows XP Home Edition is not designed to work with any version of IIS.
An upgrade to Windows XP Professional will give you IIS.

IIS is not supported on XP Home.
I have seen an article (but I have not saved the link) that provides
a workaround for XP Home but it is not for the faint-hearted. I
suspect that MicroSoft would not be too happy about this.

Hi Kenrick,

Thanks a lot for the info. I went to the site you
provided and it sounds like a little risky. Before I give
it a try, I wonder if it would be better to do an upgrade
from XP Home to XP Pro. I even tried this by using a XP
Pro CD but it keeps prompting me that it is an invalid key
number. I know it is a valid number as it worked on
another machine. I wonder if I have to do a complete
clean install instead of an upgrade.

Would appreciate it if more advice on this one.

You can't install IIS on XP home, but you can install a third-party
server. Check the free, open-source Apache web server at
http://httpd.apache.org/
