If Microsoft won't allow passwords to be saved when logging in to Hotmail or
using Live ID and thus facilitate automatic login, why do the log-in screens
for these show the OPTION to 'save password'. WHY is it that many people have
tried to work this one out but CAN'T ?

Don't know but it's never worked AFAIK.

First, the "remember my name/password option is a function of those
delightful cookies. You browser must be set to accept cookies, or a least
accept cookies from hotmail/msn mail. Your user/password are stored in a
cookie and retieved from hotmail at time of logon. I use Firefox v2 &
Internet Explorer 6 , and auto-logon to my hotmail works fine.
