If anyone can help...

Alright, here is the whole story...

I am a grad student and I have been pulling pictures off
of the internet for use in a powerpoint presentation that
is due this week. Everything was fine until yesterday. I
tried to save a few pictures and the "Save Picture As"
menu would come down. The two options were to save them as
bitmaps or as art files. Well, I needed to save them as
bitmaps for PowerPoint so I clicked on bitmap. But, when
the picture would show up in the folder, it would show the
old jpeg logo (the portrait with the one diagonal
paintbrush) and it wouldnt let me see the photo. I would
click to open the picture and it would say- can't
determine type.

I cannot imagine what happened but it certainly does not
save my pictures how they should be saved and therefore, I
cannot open them. I have gone through the troubleshooting
guides (emptied temp internet files, etc) but nothing
seems to work. I am using Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0
and Windows 98 if that helps anyone. Can anyone offer me
any advice??

1 - Browsing with AOL will give you art files instead of
jpg's. It is actually the same and you can change the
extension from art to jpg once you have saved.

2. The icon denotes which application opens the file.
When assigned to MS Photo Editor the icons for jpeg and
bmp are exactly yje same but are in different colors.
Bmp's have probably been reassigned to either Microsoft
Photo Editor or an application other than Paint. Enter
the file's properties and change the 'Opens with' section
to 'Paint'. This will change the setting for all bitmap
files.

That happens when the Temporary Internet Files are too full. In IE click
Tools | Internet Options. Click Delete Files in the Temporary Internet
files section of the General tab. On the nest window place a check mark in
the box to Delete all offline content.
