IEXPLORE process using lots of memory

While investigating why my IE6 has become slow, I have noticed that the
process list shows that the
IEXPLORE.EXE process always seems to use in excess of 18Mb memory. Sometimes
as high as 30Mb. Is this
indicative of a problem?

I have scanned and cleaned for adware and spyware. No improvement in memory
utilisation or network response. The degradation of my browser's performance
has not occured suddenly but gradually over 6 months since doing a clean
install of Win2k.

OS is Windows 2000 Pro. PC is a Pentium III with 128Mb RAM.

Do not know what tool you have. But keep them up do date.

This may be caused by a third-party program (adware, spyware, parasite).
Get AdAware and SpyBot and run them both. Keep them up to date.

If all fails then:

Go to http://www.spywareinfo.com/downloads.php#det
Download "Hijack This!" [freeware] or download direct (below):

If you get a 404 error or Access denied, try:

Unzip the Download file in a NEW FOLDER that you can create before you start
the download.
DO NOT install in your Desktop folder.
DO NOT use any of the TEMP folders that are presently in your computer.
Double-click "HijackThis.exe" and Press "Scan".

When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log"
button.
Click: "Save Log" (generates "hijackthis.log")

Next, HijackThis | Config [button] | Misc Tools [button]
Click: Generate StartupList log [button] (generates "startuplist.txt")
