IEXPLORE.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows

I repartitioned my computer's hard disk and then reinstalled Windows 2K.
Everything worked fine, until I tried to start MSIE. That's when I received
the message

IEXPLORE.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows. You will
need to restart the program. An error log is being created.

And MSIE promptly terminated.

I can't upgrade to version 6 of the Explorer.

I tried deleting several unneeded software programs. I tried running MSIE in
Safe mode, but the result was the same. I'm almost certain the solution is
to remove some key in the registry, but I don't know which one to remove and
don't want to damage the system by experimenting and removing the wrong key.

Can anyone help?

Hi accordeoniste :)

You will need the use of another computer to do the following:

First, if you have Zone Alarm installed on your computer, uninstall it and
try again. If still no joy, see the information here:

Error Message: Iexplore.exe Has Generated Errors and Will Be Closed By
Windows

This behavior can occur if one of the following conditions exist:
.. ZoneAlarm is installed on your computer.
(Uninstall)

.. Quarterdeck CleanSweep was installed on your computer before you upgraded

.. Your computer is configured to automatically run a type of program that is
damaged or is incompatible with Windows 2000 or your version of Internet
Explorer. (Find out which program and Uninstall).

or...

Error Message in Mfc42.dll Appears When Starting, and then Internet Explorer

Hope this helps.

I still have the problem.

I don't have Xupiter on my system, so that solution doesn't apply.

The disable third-party browser extensions option in the Internet Options
doesn't exist on my system.

Nor do I have ZoneAlarm or Quarterdeck installed on my system. And since the
problem also occurs when I run Windows in safe mode, I've already ruled out
the possibility that a program incompatible with MSIE is involved.

Thanks for your help anyway.

You're very welcome! Sorry I was of no assistance. Hopefully, someone else
here will have a solution that will work for you. :)
