This has never happened to me before: About 5 times today whatever
internet explorer window was opened shuts down and two boxes come up:
one is the usual one that happens when there's a problem which says
"internet explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close" etc.;
and the other one is title "iexplore.exe - Aplication Error" and says:

"The exception unknow software exception (Oxc0000409) occurred in the
application at location 0x02c1812f."

What in heaven's name is going on and how can I fix it?

I thank you in advance for your attention to this question...

So How Did I Get Infected Anyway?
For quite a few people it's by installing programs like Messenger Plus,
whose ads for malware don't identify the malware as such and try to convince
you that you owe it to the author. See also:

Don't ever do a "default" install of anything. Always choose Custom and see
what else is being carried along. Don't install any extras you're not sure
of.
