Has anyone else run into this problem? I have about 4 Gig set aside for the
Temporary Internet Files cache, and it's filled up. IE doesn't seem to know
to delete old stuff, so I have to empty the cache myself.

I'm running IE6 SP1, on WinXP SP1, with all the updates.

If you go into IE and use Tools/Internet Options and select the Advanced
tab, scroll down a bit and you will find an option in the Security section
to "Empty Temporary Internet Files when browser is closed". Tick this box.

Hope this helps.

Delete/Empty Temporary Internet Cache completely
How To: and with most operating system.

Limit you cache between 50 and 60 Meg. Anything larger can cause problems.

Hm. What sort of problems?

Also, shouldn't IE be smart enough to purge old items from the cache,
without actually cleaning out the cache every time?

Unfortunately, IE does not automatically clean out the cache. Once the
defined space is full you will get problems such as the often quoted "Cannot
save a jpg file as anything other than a bmp file". This one comes up time
and time again. By deleting the files in the Temporary Internet Files
folder, this problem goes away and you can save web images a jpg again.

I'm having the same problem and my option *IS* checked
and my cache does not have a large maximum size (60 MB).
The problem is that it worked before but it seems that
after downloading a Windows Update (don't know which
one), it ceased to delete the files automatically.

Keith,
When you select that option it modifies the following entry in the Registry:

; where the value of "0" empties the cache when the browser is closed

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet
Settings\Cache]
"Persistent"=dword:00000000

If the above is correct, then most likely your cache folder(s) is corrupt.

If you have a fast Internet connection, you can also set IE to "empty
temporary Internet files when browser is closed" from the
Tools>Options>Advanced menu. I always do this so I don't have to think
about housekeeping. Doing this might make browsing a bit slower if you
have a slow dial-up, but generally you won't notice the difference.

I have tried deleting the Temporary Internet Folder but get the reply that it is a Window's folder and Windows will not run properly so it can't be deleted!! I have the same symproms as the others about the option under Advanced to delete this folder upon IE close isn't doing it. My regisrty has the right value for Persistence=00000000. SO how can I delete this folder and get it rebuilt?
