IE7 - Saving Pages

J

Jeff Gaines

I am trying to save some pages in IE7, including:
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-US/library/ms735869.aspx

and I get an error message 'the webpage could not be saved because on of
its files is missing' - this is happening on 3 pages at msdn2 and also the
page I was referred to in another post giving details of DiskPart. I have
navigated to the pages in Firefox and saved the pages from there.

This is my first use of IE7, is this a known issue? Is there a work-round?

Jeff,

When I change to Printer Friendly Version and save, I have no issues. When I
save the page without being in Printer Friendly Version I encounter no
issues either.

Are you running Vista retail?

What build of Vista? RC1 had some issues.

I'm not aware of an issue with the final, and it works fine here. I
just went to the page referenced above and it saved a 639KB file. No
errors and the saved file opens properly.

Yes this is the RTM :)

I get an error message when I switch to printer friendly version (an htm
file cannot be found) and when it switches it still won't save :-(

It also happens with other pages, and I also can't 'send by email'.
Something weird here. I'll re-boot the machine tomorrow and see if it
fixes itself.

Must be me :-(

It's the RTM but I can't save anything, too tired to trouble shoot now,
installed 2 PC's today, I'll have a poke round tomorrow.

Jeff,

That does sound a little weird. Do you have anything like a 3rd party pop-up
blocker or add-ons of any nature for IE 7?

What happens when you start IE 7 with no extensions/add-ons?

What if you right click the IE icon on the desktop and choose Start Without
Add-ons?
Or go to Start | All Programs | Accessories | System Tools | Internet
Explorer (No Add-ons).

Many thanks for your replies Bill & Frank.

I re-booted the PC before I started trying this, I still get the same
error though when trying to save a page (in any format and several sites
just in case a particular site is an issue).

I can, though, now choose 'Printer Friendly Version' without any errors.

(During the course of doing this I discovered I'd forgotten to plug my
printer in, that Vista can't discover a printer on a Draytek Vigor, that
my Terastation has a printer port I'd forgotten about, that my printer
lead is too short to reach the printer port and it hurts when you bash
your head on the desk while crawling around connecting cables up).

Having set the printer up I can't chose 'Print To File' - it's grayed out
permanently.

I then thought I'd try e-mailing the page again.

(During the course of doing this I discovered that Vista won't play with
'TheBat!', that setting up Windows Mail is pretty easy and, after half an
hour, the mail server I was trying to use was down).

I have now managed to email it to myself from Windows Mail and can save it
from there so that part works.

However, I can still not save pages in any format from IE - even using it
with add ons disabled, although I do now know how to set up a network
printer in Vista and how to set up Windows Mail (and that it looks worth a
try) :)

I don't have any add ons in IE. I would like to try and fix this if
possible - I like to save files in mht format - and would appreciate any
more suggestions. If it comes to it I don't mind doing a clean install and
starting from scratch, my data is not on the 'C' drive and there are only
a few apps installed at this stage.

Sorry to follow up my own post!

I have turned off UAC and I can now save from IE7.

Can anybody throw any light on why this should be?
Is it possible to add programs to an approved list for UAC?

Many thanks.

Sorry, but I don't know enough yet about UAC to venture an answer.
