ie7 icon gone

~Mike Hollywood

Hi
Somehow I managed to loose the lauch icon for IE7. IE7 is still there
because if i click a link in outlook 2007 it launches IE7 and loads the
page. From there I'm good to go until I close the browser. I tried usint
the search thing but couldn't find it when i put in IE7.exe, or
Internetexplorerie7.exe, etc. How can I create or find a link that will
launch ie7? There is no shortcut anywhere in the start menu either.
Thanks,
mike

Hi Phil,
thanks for the reply.
I know how to make shortcuts and put them on the start menu or anywhere else
as far as that goes. What I want to know is the name of the IE7 file so I
can find it, and make a short cut to it.
thanks again,
mike

The program name is iexplorer.exe . It is located (usually) in C:\Program
Files\Internet Explorer .

A good way to find a file (or program) for which you do not know the exact
name is to use the wildcard '*' with a search in Windows Explorer. For
example, *exp*.exe might return a dozen hits. The one in the Internet
Explorer directory would be the one you want. Then, if you wish to confirm
that you've picked the correct program, then do a Google search on
iexplore.exe and you will find that for most Microsoft executables.

Hi Phil,
Thanks for the explaination on searching. I tried it and as you predicted
it found a bunch of files with exp in their name, but the only iexpolorer it
found was in an ie6 folder i made the other day so i could have a browser.
I found a batch file on the internet that creates a folder with all of the
versions of ie in it upto version 6. That was before i stumbled on the fact
that ie7 still launches from an email link. This is a real mystery to me.
You were right about C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer being there, but
there was no iexplore.exe in it. ???

Very strange situation you've got there. I'd wonder why not only the icons
but the EXE file for Internet explorer were deleted from the computer. If
not operator error (check the recycle bin) then maybe malware could be the
cause.

Internet explorer is completely integral with XP so it isn't entirely
surprising that it still launches from OE without the iexplore executable
being in its proper location. Try doing a system restore to a point just
before the icons disappeared. Alternatively try reinstalling IE7.

Looking into iexeplore.exe further, I find it is is a small executable that
evidently starts Internet Explorer 7 explicitly as opposed to the instances
of Internet Explorer 7 that are started to perform functions as a part of
Windows XP. The iexplore.exe file is only 611 KBytes, obviously not the
entirety of Internet Explorerer which is integrated into Windows XP. As a
test, I renamed iexplore.exe, and Windows XP immediately created a new
iexplore.exe (or reestablished the original name while leaving the changed
name as sort of a tag-end that can not be deleted in the ordinary manner.
Looking inside iexplore.exe I find a number of icons for Internet Explorer.

At this point I haven't a clue to what has actually happened to your system.
It is an interesting problem, and I may figure it out, but you would be
better served by someone who might actually know what is going on. My GUESS
is that you might try downloading and reinstalling Internet Explorer 7, then
checking for any security updates that may need to be repeated. This
doesn't get to the REASON iexplore.exe has disappeared from your system, so
it couldn't hurt to do an extensive scan for malware.

Good luck, and please, if you get any further clues as to what is going on,
please post in this thread... I'd really like to know, and it could help
others who hit the same poblem.

On my system, the IE 7 executable is located here: C:\Program Files\Internet
Explorer\iexplore.exe

It could be different for you, depending on where you installed IE7 (the
above is the default location).....so, try and see if it is this for you as
well: use Windows Explorer to browse to c:\program files\internet explorer\.

Otherwise, browse to "program files" and look through the list for anything
remotely suggesting it might be "IE7". I think you can then right click the
actual executable, and it gives you an option to create a desktop shortcut
to it.

It turns out not to be quite that simple. That's what I had though too, but
iexplore.exe is evidently just a small executable used to explicitly invoke
Internet Explorer 7, while the major parts of Internet Explorer are
integrated into the operating system. After the original poster ('~Mike
Hollywood') followed up with the fact that iexplore.exe does not exist in
his system. Just as a test, I renamed iexplore.exe in a Windows XP system,
and a new iexplore.exe popped up. Evidently iexplore.exe can not really be
renamed, because the renamed file remained, and could not be deleted in the
usual fashion. I suggested downloading and reinstalling Internet Explorer
7, but that is just a guess at the solution. (See my posts.) Perhaps you
have some follow-up suggestions.

Hi, OK, here goes,
of all the suggestions, reloading ie7 sounded the quickest way to be back in
business. So, I downloaded the install file, then the validation thing
ran, tthen it said it was a one way trip and i couldn't remove it, then it
said to close down all rnning aps, then it did a spyware scan, then it
installed and wanted to reboot, so I gave it the go ahead, and after all the
wizzing and clicking i was back at my desktop with no icon for ie7, just as
before.
So then I searched again on iexplorer.exe, and this time, guess what, it
didn't find any file with that name, so I did another search using
*exp*.exe, and if found the usual suspects but not the one I want.

I use AVG 7 for anti-virus and it found some stuff last week, but that was
after this happend but who knows, maybe it's related. I've forgotten what
it found but it handled it, but the bugger had gotten into two of my restore
points so I purged them, thus rendering the idea of getting behind the
problem via a restore point unworkable because i only ones from after the
problem started. so, I'm back to sqare one. ?

It still launches from a link in an email in outlook 2007. ie 6 still
works. mozilla firefox 2 has been working all along.

Phil gave me a clue with the info of 611kb file length, so I searched on
that and the only hit was for a garmin gps file. so....
I'm stimied still. hmm... sounds like a song title. stimied still in ie7
land, la la la...
Thanks for all of the information.
Any other ideas will be greatly appreciated.

Hi,
Attempts to uninstall IE from XP [usually] simply remove access to IE,
including hiding iexplore.exe.

Try this...
Go to Add/remove programs> Add/remove Windows components> put a check by IE.
OK your way out. Restart.

You may also have to go into "Set program access & defaults" and make
choices regarding "Default" and "Enable access."

You may also have to go into Display properties> Desktop> Customize to check
IE under Desktop icons.

Hope this helps,
Don

That's a step in the right direction! But has iexplore.exe returned? Have
you tried opening an email with html content? There may be more involved,
so you should check for proper operation of Internet Explorer for integrated
functions other than web browsing. In making attempts to investigate your
problem I managed to end up with Outlook unable to open an email with html
content. Using Google, I came across indications that some malware creates
an iexplore.exe file in a directory OTHER than \Internet Explorer (none of
the cites I found seemed particularly authoritative.) Perhaps the malware
removal you mentioned in an earlier post in this thread bobbled the removal
removed a registry entry it shouldn't've, as well as the iexplore.exe in
\Internet Explorer? Now I've got to muck with my self-inflicted registry
error B^(

If it turns out that you have lingering problems with Internet Explorer 7
(see my just previous post), this is how I solved my self inflicted wound.

1. Download and save the Internet Explorer 7 package from Microsoft at
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/downloads/ie/getitnow.mspx

2. Use Add or remove programs in the Control Panel to remove 'Windows
Internet Explorer 7'

3. Install Internet Explorer 7 and reboot.

4. This will restore the registry entries, file associations, iexplore.exe,
and Start Menu item for Internet Explorer 7.

Depending how your system lost iexplore.exe and the Internet Explorer 7
Start Menu item, the 'Customize' button in the Start Menu property sheet may
not restore all that is broken.
