IE6 "Unknown Error"

For a couple of weeks now every time I close IE6 I get an error message
asking me to let IE6 reopen itself and whether or not to let it report the
error to Microsoft. I have let it report many times...and I have let it
reopen but the results are always the same. Clicking on the 'tech info'
portion of the error report reveals:
"Exception Information; Code: 0xc0000005, Address: 0x0000000071706e3c. An
unknown error occurred in IE. A solution or workaround is not available."
I 'open' IE after each online usage to delete cookies, files and clear the
history. I have found this to be much more effective in avoiding spyware than
running Adaware and Spysweeper each time, but other than having to deal with
the error message...and having lost the ability to 'Quick View' files
(especially JPG photos) I have had very little trouble. I have run both
Norton and MacAfee to determine if there is a virus or trojan. Nope. I have
deleted IE6 and reinstalled the former version, deleted IE6 and downloaded it
again from Microsoft. Still the same results.
Any suggestions?

Hi Lee :)

I'm afraid you're not avoiding spyware or such by just clearing your History
or TIF's. You have a hijacker, malware, spyware or parasites on your system
causing this problem. Thus, in addition to running your updated anti-virus
program, you should do the following to be sure none of these are present on
your system. Although you may have already run one or more of the programs,
please do so again according to the instructions below. Some variants of
malware can replicate themselves over and over if not removed properly.
Obviously, you are nto cleaning it from your system properly. Please follow
all instructions carefully to be sure your system is thoroughly cleaned:

Dealing with Unwanted Spyware and Parasites:

Be sure to run CWShredder, Ad-aware and Spybot.
If these steps do not resolve your problem, please post back to this thread
with the details and any error messages.

to allow the experts there to evaluate your log and advise you of the
necessary steps to clean your system.

Also this program searches for hidden .dlls that recreate the malware.

below, download a copy of LSPFIX from any of the following sites:

(if your OS is Win2k or XP) The process of removing certain malware may kill

enable you to regain your connection.

NOTE: If you can not download these programs from the Internet, if your PC
has CD read capabilities, go to another computer with CD-ROM burning
capabilities. Create a folder on the hard drive of the other computer called
HOLD, download the programs to that folder, then burn that folder to a CD.
Copy the HOLD folder to your HD and then install the programs from there
and run them. After you have IE access again, update all programs where
possible to get the latest definitions and run them again in Safe Mode to be
sure there are no lingering items on the system.

I did as you recommended. Adaware, Spysweeper, CWShredder, Norton and MacAfee
found nothing. I downloaded SpySubtract PRO and it found 10 bots. Got rid of
them and the same thing still happens with IE6. Downloaded a new IE6 from
Microsoft to 'documents' and a message came on stating "A previous
installation has pending work requiring a reboot." I rebooted. Same thing. I
then 'uninstalled' the current IE6 to an older version. Still the same thing.
I cannot replace the existing IE6 after rebooting...and it still gives me the
same message error as the original post.

I am beginning to suspect that I need a complete download of IE6 without the
download using 'exising' components. It has dawned on me that the 'existing
components' might contain the problem(s). Is there a way to obtain a full,
fresh download of IE6? ...and do you think this might help?

Thank you all for your help. I managed to get the new IE6 downloaded with
your sites. I am running Windows 98SE, so the instructions were not
precise...but I got it done with a little experimenting. The computer runs a
little faster and a little more reliably, but the original problem is still
there with the same old error message when I shut down the explorer. I guess
I will have to live with it because I have too many pictures, programs and
saved documents to do a quick restore and I have run out of ideas to
straighten the IE6's glitch.

As much as I regret it I am back again. I downloaded all of the 'upgrades and
patches' that Microsoft has for IE6 and now the condition has worsened
inasmuch as the IE shuts down when I get the error message. Before I simply
'unchecked' the "restart IE" in the error message box and clicked "do not
send" and it left the IE screen when I closed the error box. Now when I go
through the process it shuts down the IE6 window. This occurs when I attempt
to download or access information from sites that require the IE window in
lieu of the standard AOL window. In additon the 'error message' has changed
slightly. It is now: CODE: 0xc0000005 (just as before) but ADDRESS:
0x000000007179615b.

Does anyone know what this means? Is it feasible to re-download a full IE6
without letting it use portions that have already been downloaded. I am
suspecting more and more that some portion of IE6 that continues to be
"reloaded" into new downloads is corrupted in some way. If you think that
this is possible, please inform me how to get a completely "fresh" new
download.

There is no virus, trojan or spybot on my machine that can be detected by
SpySubtract Pro, Adaware, Spy Sweeper, CWShredder 2, Norton Antivirus or
AOL's MacAfee. I'm stumped again and this time I cannot even pay for some
things that I order because the sites use an IE window.

Thanks for your continued efforts.

I finally tracked down the problem that was causing the IE6 'unknown error'
message. My hair is completely white now, but I beat the problem.

AOL had attached a corrupted tool bar to the IE6 window during my last
download of the "wonderful new AOL 9.0" software. Once I deleted the AOL
toolbar from the IE6 window everything was back to normal. After months of
aggrevation, postings to this board and Internet searches I stumbled across
the fix accidentally. Unfortunately it was AFTER I had purchased a portable
80 GB hard-drive to save my files prior to reformatting my computer. At least
I have a larger hard-drive for storage now and I don't have to go through the
hassle of restoring the computer.

Thanks for all of the advice through time.
