Yeah, XP is just around the corner. However, I did find a fix for my
problem, and the "blank tabs" problem that I didn't realize I had. See my
post one level up. As you say, though, the fix may be only temporary.
Thanks,

"fixable" per say. This is one of them. I think you can try to resolve it
until you're blue in the face and still won't......at least not without
doing some damage to something else. If you're still running ME......do
yourself a favor and resolve many of your problems by upgrading. Your ME
box is more vulnerable to security holes than you think and Microsoft no
longer supports ME. Sorry I have only suggestions and no good answer for
you.
WIN ME is pretty stable, but for surfing on the internet, because you
have to apply the security updates. Applying the security updates can
break your software. The best thing to do is start from scratch on an
erased hard disk, grab all of your updates, then install all your
software. This is not a fun process if you want to be doing other
things.
You can order security updates from Microsoft and they will send them
to you by mail for free, but sadly they are not up to date and may be
missing several critical updates (something is better than nothing
though, yeah!).
For a company that markets its ability to deliver goods and services
on the fly through their software, it makes you wonder where their
committment is, especially considering it is not because they cannot
afford to send you up to date software, they are not broke (yet).
Until they stop trying to save money by mass producing CD's, instead
of delivering what customers need, when they need it, it is something
to put up with? Is it because they are too busy comparing themselves
with other companies?
It all boils down to how much time and money you want to spend on the
"problem". For a $100, you can get a second hard drive and a
removable disk bay enclosure that will allow you to exchange hard
drives without opening up the machine.
Make an install of Windows ME with all the security updates, and
nothing else. Use this "hard drive" or "machine" to surf the
internet. Or save some money and burn a copy of a bootable copy of
Linux such as Live SUSE or Knoppix.
I think it is wrong that you have to pay for XP to reduce security
holes, and of course XP has security holes (so where is the
justification in that arguement??).
Until Microsoft gives users the ability to remove "admin accounts"
from their machines, they will never truly be hardened? I would like
the ability to remove the admin account, I can always restore it from
a backup with the account enabled. Many viruses and scripts cannot
function without the "admin account" enabled.
If Microsoft were to remove this lock from the system, I would support
it more vigorously.
