Have XP home running on an old 5 yr old Compaq presario 5000, no
problems --- just a big annoyance.

I open IE6 to a web site and every time I try scrolling, it does the
fading in and out of about 2-3 clicks... very annoying.

Help!!!

Don't use IE6. Update to IE8 or face certain malware. You may have
malware already so do a malware and virus scan in Safe Mode. Are you
still on SP2 as well?

You are probably infected by now. I would reinstall XP and make sure I
install SP3 and IE8 as well as Firefox. I trust you have everything
backed up.

You should be using IE 8. 'Last I read, even Microsoft is recommending
individuals and business abandon IE 6.

If the video card isn't already 7 ready, then now's an opportunity to pop in
a new one and install Windows 7.

The OP is gonna need a helluva lot more than a new video card to run
Windows 7 on that machine. Have you looked up the specs? It won't run
Windows 7. Full stop.

Specs:
Duron-900 CPU, 128MB of SDRAM, 64KB L2 cache, Windows Me, 40GB hard
drive, 16X DVD-ROM drive, 12X/4X/32X CD-RW drive, Compaq NVidia GeForce2
MX graphics card with 32MB of SDRAM, 17-inch Compaq FS740 monitor,
integrated sound, JBL Platinum Series speakers, V.90 modem

Not enough RAM for Windows 7.

I lent out a Gateway 600 MHz desktop a few years ago or so, and they
recently phoned back saying it was just sitting in their basement so they
were going to return it soon. I plan to put enough RAM in and then give it a
spin with Windows 7. I realize I will get the non-Aero-ed theme, but I want
to see how it runs otherwise.

The video card isn't up to it either. Nor will the onboard sound be
supported.

Do you know how much SDRAM -- if you can get it -- costs nowadays? It
ain't cheap.

I can't say for sure, but it's sure worth a try! It's free to download
and installs very easily. And it *much* more up-to-date than IE6!

Well, I will see what's hanging around here and if there are any deals out
there. If not, then forget it.

It could run 7 (?). That said, 7 would take a relatively huge chunk out of
the harddrive space available. The advanced Aero graphics would be turned
off and, with its 512 MB RAM and less 1 GHz processor speed you have less
than stellar performance. If you tinker, it might be fun to attempt to load
the thing onto it, but the results might vary ..
